DR.RENUKA – A NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK

A girl from village with a childhood ambition of becoming a doctor and serving the society might sound very normal. But, a girl who turned her ambitions into reality and further becoming a pioneer isn’t a everyday story.

Dr.Renuka Ramakrishnan’s journey into serving leprosy affected people started when she was in her high school. At the age of 16, she as a lone warrior stood against the odds of a conservative society in Kumbakonam to cremate a abandoned body of a leprosy affected person. That determination never faded away even a droplet.

The determination and courage came from her father who served in the Indian Army. From her childhood, she was taught that service to human is service to God. The admiration and support enabled her to crack it into the top notch JIPMER to pursue her medical degree. Being the best was almost a habit by now and she emerged to be the topper in her studies.

Post her medical degree, she voluntarily chose to do a Non PG course for a year to serve the needy people in a remote village in Tamilnadu. She was an angel in disguise for those in the village who never had proper medical care. At St.Thomas Hospital and Leprosy Center, Chettupattu, she not only took care of the leprosy affected people there but was also taking care of every single patient, from snake bites to heart attacks, nothing could win over Dr.Renuka’s formidable courage and valor.

She specialized in Skin and leprosy and for the past 30 years, she is into making lives of leprosy affected people better than ever. In 2001, she became a member of The Royal Society of Health, London. The patients describe her as their god sent incarnation of Mother Teresa.

Despite her professional service, she also runs a charitable trust and is also a Rotarian and a lot of activities keeps happening. She has been a active member of Bala Vihar since 2000. She has been the pillar of support for children and destitute kids being a medical officer and a active volunteer with the Indian Council of Child Welfare.

She regularly conducts free medical camps, awareness programs, slum guard events for the healthcare and welfare of women and children. She is also in environmentalist and hygiene tutor for kids in rural government schools. Dr.H.V.Hande, had personally appreciate her efforts and selfless service towards the society. She has been recognized with over 50 awards for her lifelong service. The Rajiv Gandhi Millenium Award, Mother Teresa award, Gem of Tamilnadu award from the National Integrity Cultural academy are few to name.

Words fall short to describe her efforts towards awareness and cure of Breast Cancer. She has been the guest of honor and one of the leading medical experts who work on grassroot levels to raise early awareness and henceforth eradicate breast cancer.

No doubt, It is people like Dr.Renuka who are making this place a better one for the future generations!!
